After placing twice as a 2-yr-old Sharp Writer broke his maiden at the end of that year going 8.5f in 1:45.95. Sharp Writer came back a month later to come in second by a nose to Buzzard's Bay in the Golden Gate Derby. Jerry Hollendorfer thought he had so much promise that he nominated Sharp Writer to the 2005 Kentucky Derby. Unfortunately an injury kept Sharp Writer from advancing toward the historic race. Instead he won another 8f race in 1:37.44 then proceeded to win the Walnut Creek Stakes going 11f in 2:15.15 an the Alamedan Handicap going 8.5f in 1:43.22.
