Within the first few years of purchasing the land that became Monticule, Gary Knapp started his first Kentucky-based tree nursery. The trees in that first planting included primarily evergreens such as Spruce and Pine. As those trees have matured they have been transplanted throughout the farm, highlighting landscape elements and protecting structures.
In 2001, the tree nursery was expanded to include deciduous trees such as Maple and Oak. In 2002, over 9,000 seedlings were planted including additional varieties such as gingko, redbud, beech, birch, yellow wood, dogwood, Chinese elm, and sycamore. Over the past 2 years, Monticule's maintenance crew has transplanted thousands of dogwoods, redbuds, and other varieties throughout the farm.
