Derby Day in Monticule's suite at Churchill Downs was marked by both anticipation and anxiety. While everyone was enjoying the day's food, drink and wagering there was an undercurrent of questions. Could he really do it? If he did it, what would it mean for the farm? If he didn't do it, could he at least come out of it safe and sound?
The excitement on the suite's balcony mounted as Big Brown hit the homestretch and jubilation ensued as he crossed the finish line. Champagne was passed and Dr. Knapp toasted Monticule's Farm Manager, Dominique Tijou, thanking him for his care and expertise in breeding Mien, foaling Big Brown and rearing him as a yearling. Then Dr. Knapp's daughter, Jessica, toasted her father saying, "I know you want to be modest and humble, but it was your vision that had Mien bred to Boundary, your vision that brought us this day, and your vision that will carry us into the future."
Dr. Knapp and his guests were the last ones to leave the suites that day
and back at Monticule Mien was given some extra treats and told that her
son did well.
